Assembling The Scale Model Scenery Diorama Baseboard BB006 Kit

Building A Model Railway – Assembling the BB006 Diorama Baseboard kit

In this article, we take a look at how to assemble one of the popular baseboard kits, in this case, the BB006 Small Diorama baseboard. This is ideal for use as a practice piece to try out new scenic modelling methods to display your models on, such as diecast road vehicle etc. The baseboard kit includes a built-in backscene too!

Tools You’ll need are glue such as Deluxe Materials Roket Card Glue & an old cloth to wipe away excess glue.

In the image above you can see the kit contents & supplied instruction sheet. Familiarise yourself which part is which. You should have the backboard section, display board top section, two side sections & one front section. The front section includes the Scalemodelscenery.co.uk logo. In the image below is the glue we are using for this assembly.

Assembly

Layout the two side pieces & front piece.

Test fit one side piece into the front piece.

It should be a tight snug friction fit. This is normal.

Next, apply a small bead of glue on the two lower sections on the end of the side piece you’ve just test fitted.

Now re-insert the side piece into the front piece. The Scalemodelscenery.co.uk logo should be facing outwards. Apply a bead of glue along the inside corner as shown on the photo on the right.

Now moving on to the other side, as before test fit the side piece into the rear of the front piece.

Again it should be a snug friction tight fit.

Remove side piece & glue the recessed sections on the end of the side piece as shown.

Now reinsert the glued end of the side piece into the back of the front piece. Again run a bead of glue along the inside of the corner joint as shown. Make sure that both joints are square & true before the glue sets.

Now test fit the sides & front section onto the display top section. Again it should be a tight snug friction fit. If all okay remove display top section.

Next glue the recess sections along the top of the side & front pieces as shown on the right.

Now insert the top display piece on to the glued side & front pieces. Make sure the top section sits fully square on top of the front & side pieces. There should be no gaps between the sides & the top.

Run a bead of glue around the inside along the join line as shown on the right.

Now test fit the assembly onto the back section as shown on the right.

As before, apply a bead of glue on the recess sections as shown on the right.

Once inserted into the back section, make sure all is square & true. Then apply a bead of glue around the inside joint as shown on the right.

Wipe away any excess glue.

Allow glue time to dry. That’s it!! Now it’s time add your scenic modelling to this baseboard, this we’ll look at in a forthcoming article.

Happy modelling.
