Accessory Power Supplies
On the subject of power supplies (other than for motive power purposes), there are many and varied accessories that in turn use many and varied power supplies.
To provide power for my platform lighting, I was going to utilise the uncontrolled output on the rear of my fairly basic power controller (I’m an old fashioned DC girl), until I noticed that it was too high a voltage. Looking into possible future required voltages for my layout/diorama, it seemed that I had opened a can of worms. However, after a bit of heavyweight t’interweb searching, I found what seems to be the perfect solution.
Although the article is aimed at producing a homemade bench supply, it’s application to model railways seemed obvious to me.
The project is probably not best suited to those with no electrical knowledge, but if you have some electrical knowledge, it should be well within one’s capabilities.
As the project utilises a PC tower PSU (power supply unit), all dangerous supply voltages are contained within the case of the PSU, and therefore perfectly safe if the supply is correctly earthed.
